Crazy how I am just seeing this now. I'm the owner of the car you used for the thumbnail 😂

I've owned six New Beetles, and currently own a 2002 NB Turbo S, and a 2013 Beetle TDI. One of my New Beetles was a 2005 1.8T Convertible. Never had a 2.0, only 1.8t, and TDI NB's. I love them all, though!

I have a 99 Beetle 2.0 5speed . 200343 miles on it. After market air intake and i fabricated a cowl injection for the hood to pull cool air, After market muffler just peeks out back bottom left. No electronic mods. After market air dam down front. Coilovers drops it a little for a nice stants. I painted it the early Desert Sand with Blackhood, Top and Trunk lid, rear spoiler for looks and a small top window spoiler I'll call it for air flow. Made Retro rims and put Vw baby Moons on them and White walls. Fast no only down hill lol . But I was never thinking fast I was thinking Gas mileage and at this point I get 62mpg highway and it's cheaper that my big diesel truck. People tell me they usually hate new beetles but love mine lol. I'm a old school guy and have built numerous cars and trucks but this was actually fun to play with.

You didnt mention the upwards to 50mpg the tdi manual option gets with this car, making it great for long distance driving. 👍

The Beetle is the most recognizable car on the road. I own 2 1.8Ts, and one was ordered special online which was the only way to get the deep yellow colour at the time. It gets almost too much attention 'punch buggy!'. But I get compliments on it all the time. My silver one doesn't get much attention at all.

1. As someone already pointed out, there was a regular Turbo, which made 150 hp, and a Turbo S, which made 180 hp. The layyer also came with a 6 speed manual.
2. There were 2 very different TDIs available, a 90 horse up through 2003, and a 100 horse after 2004. The latter was also the first production VW to offer a DSG.
3. Beetle suspension is the exact same as Golf/GTI/Jetta, so ALL mods for those cars fit. Next to Honda Civics, those are easily the most commonly modified cars in the world.
4. Tuning and modifying TDIs almost always IMPROVES reliability, as long as you don't half-ass it. 1.8T is kind of a crapshoot though.
5. There is still a plethora of cosmetic mods available for New Beetles. The car was a HUGE deal 25 years ago and had a ton of aftermarket support. You can easily find used and NOS parts, and a few companies still make brand new parts such as lights.

I had a 2002 New Beetle for 14 1/2 years, and only got rid of it because of the pricey problems that crept up. The only thing I changed was replacing the steel wheels with VW alloy wheels. It was such a fun and enjoyable car, and the community is wonderful.

Honestly glad you did this car! The RSI is pretty crazy of a car overall and the new beetle has some cool looks in my opinion, these things dropped on their nuts is unique and looks so good

Excellent and actually fair review of the highs and lows of the new beetle! I'm planning a refurb on one I can find cheaply here in Cleveland and make it go a little faster and hopefully lower.

The beetle is just one of those vehicles you have to sit in to understand. I have the blue race beetle in the video. I was looking at the gti, Jetta, and TT. All it took was one test drive to fall in love with the beetle.

We have a 2009 New Beetle, bought it used in October 2010, it now has 287, 000 miles on it. I've had two 2013 Diesel Beetles one sedan and one convertable. I've lost them both, totaled within two years of each other. Heart broken. I have found a 2014 Eos, 9673 original miles, I call her Vulpix.
