City Of Tallahassee Commissioner Scott Maddox is our guest for the 5th episode. Here's his bio!
Commissioner Scott Maddox's roots in Tallahassee and his devotion to serving its people run deep. As the son of a police officer and a special education teacher, Maddox learned at an early age what it meant to stand up for those who have no advocate.
Maddox spent much of his youth working to improve his community as the youngest Jaycees President in the country. After running an aggressive campaign, Maddox was elected as the youngest Florida delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention. There he went from event to event with the oldest delegate, fellow Floridian Congressman Claude Pepper.
It was also during this period that he and his college sweetheart and future wife, Sha, became active in the Big Brother Big Sister Program.
In 1993 while still in law school and at only 24 years old, Maddox was elected the youngest City Commissioner in Tallahassee's history. A year later, his fellow commissioners elected him Mayor pro-tempore and in 1995 they elected him Mayor. In 1996, the citizens of Tallahassee passed a referendum calling for a new "leadership" Mayor directly elected by the residents to serve a four-year term. Tallahassee citizens then elected Maddox as Tallahassee's first leadership Mayor in February 1997 where he served until 2003.
Elected by his peers, Maddox served as President of the Florida League of Cities from 2000-2001. In that capacity, he advocated on behalf of municipalities on the state and federal levels. As FLC President, Maddox embarked on a 405 city tour called "Mayor on the Move" where he visited every current Florida municipality and met with their local officials to learn best practices. Also as Mayor, Maddox advocated on the federal level on behalf of the American Public Power Association, including giving public testimony before key committees.
As Tallahassee's first Leadership Mayor, Maddox pushed for a bold agenda for the Capital City. His accomplishments include:
Several road improvements including the creation of Blair Stone Road and widening of Capital Circle
Created the Mayor's Initiative on Race Relations
Created the Mayor's Interdenominational Prayer Breakfast
Helped attract three new air carriers to Tallahassee Regional Airport
Brought the Challenger Learning Center/IMAX theater to downtown Tallahassee
Fought for Cascades Park and Gaines Street improvements
Acquired environmentally sensitive land, overseeing a large expansion of the city's parks, greenways and trails, and leading Tallahassee to win the coveted All America City award
Furthermore, these goals were attained while keeping taxes and utility rates low.
Over his 20 year political career, Maddox has served on dozens of boards and committees advocating especially on behalf of the disabled, children and seniors. He currently serves on boards of the Leon County Schools Foundation, Miami-Dade Zoo, Florida League of Cities, Elder Care Services and Tallahassee Museum. He is incoming chair of the Blueprint 2000 Intergovernmental Agency and serves on the National League of Cities Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Advocacy Committee and the Universities Communities Council.
Originally from Miami, Maddox moved to North Florida and graduated from Leon High School. A graduate of Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and a juris doctorate degree from the Florida State University College of Law, Maddox is a frequent lecturer in the fields of Political Science and Public Administration. Maddox and his wife Sha are immensely proud of their family, Jack and Denver, who attend Leon County public schools, and their two bulldogs, Lockjaw and Blue.
