Biden Warns Against Violence in Student Protests Over Gaza

President Joe Biden said he would defend the right to peacefully protest on college campuses but drew a line against violence following a wave of demonstrations at US universities against Israel’s war in Gaza and his handling of the conflict that have threatened his reelection prospects.

“There’s the right to protest but not the right to cause chaos,” Biden said Thursday at the White House, his first extended comments on the pro-Palestinian demonstrations that have recently engulfed college campuses in the US. “None of this is a peaceful protest.”

The recent protests have highlighted the growing discontent among progressives, young people and Muslim and Arab Americans over the war — and the deep rift within Biden’s own Democratic party over his handling of the issue.
