'Alien: Romulus's Cailee Spaeny on Sigourney Weaver blazing the path for women in sci-fi & horror

She is saying that her sense of self concept is based on the fact that sigourney weaver demonstrated a strong woman on screen 40 plus years ago making that the archetype of girls to look up to and become and women to teach their girls on what to aspire...Strong Smart Ingenious capable of changing societal discourse and girls and women of today embody that so the concept was no where near foreign to her because of actresses like Sigourney Weaver and her character Ellen Ripley.

Though the character of Ripley is standout during that time (and even today), it wasn’t really anything to do with Sigourney herself. The role was written for a man / androgynous. Sigourney has said she just played it straight as an everyday person because that’s how it was written and part of what attracted her to the role. There’s a story about how she got casted: she ended up accidentally going to the wrong hotel and when she got to the right one, the executives could hear her rushing down the hallway, compose herself, then enter. Her ability to recover and have a commanding presence helped win her the role. For the sequel Aliens, James Cameron specifically wrote the character for Sigourney - Cameron loves and respects the theme of strong women in the face of overwhelming odds and the theme of motherhood. Sigourney is phenomenal, however the talking point in this video should actually be towards thanking the character’s writers (and the studio executives for ensuring the character survived at the end of the first film).
