It's not just performance. Native apps are more customizable and consistent with the OS design and UI.

2:45 200ms is a huge delay in terms of computing time! Huge change in UX with a 200ms difference.

I can't say for certain what the future looks like, but I think the best way to future proof yourself is to stay connected to native development. The reason I say that is because AR, VR, and AI are going to be very very prominent factors of app development. As of right now, native development (say with like ios AR kit) makes developing these technologies easier than cross-platform development.

Again, I don't know what the future looks like. Perhaps integrating AI into a cross-platform app with React Native will be even easier and more efficient than native app development. Who knows.

The simple answer is, wherever it's easier to make money. That's where the future of mobile development is. To me it seems to be between PWAs and Hybrid Frameworks like React Native or Flutter. Who's to say they can't coexist though?

Thats how i think at it. If you use a native tehnology, you will get that 0.2s performance increase, but if you use an hybrid tehnology, the actual app would only take half of the time, and you can spend the other half optimising your code to be even faster than the native code you wouldve written in that period of time (sorry for bad english)

I don't care of the future of mobile app. What I care about is, which one the (relatively) easiest ? xamarin, react native, ionic, flutter, android (java), kotlin, or ?

I love those video where you're helping me, a junior dev, get some insight from someone with experience and avoid certain mistakes. Keep it up !

It's almost 2 years later now. Can you please give an update on the situation of mobile app development? I would appreciate it lot, because I don't really know which way to get started with app development.

Flutter will be abandoned within 5 to 10 years

React-native build time (30min) vs native iOS (2min)... I worked in react-native for 1 year and recently jumped back on a project using it. It's worse than before due to Device Fragmentation and continuous management and changes of the core APIs for the phones. So I think that the Cross Platform veneer quickly loses its lustre once you actually start working on them.

Yes it's expensive but to a lot of companies speed is one factor that is key. My company uses a native app to serve it's customers and it does so because our competitors are many and they work fast too. Many companies would rather foot the cost of a native app than sacrifice some speed. You pull up the native mobile app in a remote area and it's like you're on wifi. I think that's what they are going for.

For a freelance, cross platform makes sense. For serious dev(where high scaling ) is needed native is the best route.

Where performance is key, native is the way to go. Hybrid html5 game development is failing and disappointing. Not only the perf are far far behind native, but also you have to write native plugins and handle hundreds of edge cases in order to get something viable which is more time consuming than writing native apps. Hybrid apps running in a web view will always be 'halfassed apps', huge input latency, less responsive, hungry on memory and don't 'feel right'. In any case you have to be very familiar with native dev in order to develop a viable hybrid app. React native apps are not hybrid.

Responsive PWAs will work too, depending on use cases. There will be improvements on React Native as FB are doing a rewrite on it as we speak, so really looking forward to that.
