How DRUPAL Does Custom Post Types Better Than WordPress 🤯

With the recent excitement around Custom Post Types & Fields in WordPress, I thought it would be interesting to see how other CMS platforms handle their own versions.

Drupal still holds a place in my heart as the first no-code tool I used to feel really powerful as a web developer. Their built-in features of Content Types & Fields & Views is really admirable, still 15 plus years later.

If I came from different CMS, saw Drupal and WP for first time, looking at those build-in custom fields & design, it would be Drupal all the way. Luckily I have the money for Bricks + ACF Pro/JetEngine, but otherwise Drupal would be the logical choice. When trying to get something slightly more advanced done in WP, it often feels like you're jerry-rigging something together with multiple plugins 😅

This is a great idea and format! I'm already a fan of this series—count me in. I haven't used it in ages either. It's very powerful, but certainly not as direct and simple to use as the Create Content Model. I believe much of this could be accomplished in the block editor, as seen in the prototype, and with loops in a pattern (which is also kind of a view). We are missing filters, categories, etc., and we could get close while keeping it simple.

Very interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing more. I see no good reason why WordPress can’t offer basic custom fields and post types. Also, the UI is much better.

I haven’t used Drupal in ages. The admin experience looks way more modern. I think WordPress could be shifting this direction a bit with the newer admin UI and data views. I think the post/page editing experience could benefit from this cleaner, one panel approach.

What got me really intrigued is the table view builder. That would be amazing to create something like that out of posts. I know you could achieve the layout with core blocks, but it’s not the same as a table. That’s pretty cool.

I like this series idea. From working at multiple college/universities that use Drupal instead of WordPress I suspect this may be why they use it?!? I always found editing more annoying and limited as someone w limited access but if they want a user to have only limited "insert some text here" format, where custom post/page types are all identically formatted, maybe admins deciding to buy the tool find it clearer for their use case out of the box? (Of course that can be accomplished w WordPress).

Also, how you use body as a field WordPress should do the same thing, the classic editor could be a field, and the block editor could be a field that you could choose at will

The nice menu of Drupal ist the same system as the "classic WP Admin". I even prefer the WP one, because of the dark color of the menu. Helps focusing on the bright main content. The block editor interface with to many sidebars and panels are hard to use.

Never used Drupal: Can you save this content types to file to version it?

Take a look at how Webflow does it. Nomenclature is a bit different. They call custom post types Collections.

Drupal always been awesome CMS. Unfortunately developer oriented mainly. No way to promote it to the end users, if I need Composer for any plugin installation. I hope the new Drupal Starshot will be really user oriented.
