Battle of Shiloh Part 1, The Valley of Death | Animated Battle Map

The Battle of Shiloh was a major moment in the American Civil War because of the high casualty rate. In this video, I animated the opening volleys of the Battle of Shiloh, demonstrating one of the bloodiest moments of the battle, the Valley of Death, where multiple Confederate brigades attempted to dislodge the division of William Tecumseh Sherman but got butchered in a valley created by the Shiloh Branch.

My Great Great Grandfather James H. Hart, was a private in the 46th Illinois, Company A. Not only did he survive the bloody mess of Shiloh, but was never wounded during the war. In 2012, my father and I attended the 150th anniversary of the battle, in full uniform, but with minimal gear, and we walked through that country. Hard to imagine a worse place to fight a battle.

Col. Marks lost both arms in two separate engagements. As I sit here enjoying my coffee, typing this, I find a new appreciation for something we all take for granted everyday. Full faculties. Consider the will of a man that lost an arm and decided, nope, not done with war yet.

I live ten miles from the battlefield. Every time I go I get goosebumps. These were brave men on both sides no matter how you feel about their cause to fight. I have been to every battlefield in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and most in Virginia. If you want to see a battlefield that hasn't been destroyed by man's touch go to Shiloh. It's really in the middle of no where. Beautiful place and very serene.

The 154th TN was an interesting regiment and one of the best trained for this battle, being a pre war militia regiment based in Memphis. They were upset that they couldn't have the honor of being the 1st TN since there was already another regiment of the same designation that formed before Tennessee even seceded, so they instead decided to be designated their pre war regomental number instead of taking the 2nd TN. In battle, they performed very well, they were noted to have their maneuvers down to book, shifting from column formation to battle line (under cannon fire) in a professional time frame, and managed to capture many Federal batteries, pushing back the Ohian regiments guarding it.

I like your voice. One of the saddest points in our nation's history. It's sad that so many people hated each other because of their color and because of where they were from. It had nothing to do with who any of these people actually were. There were a lot of fine people on both sides.
Thank you for this historical explanation.

I have a few things to add:
1.) Halleck was a hack. Anything that had to do with fighting, he was a Monday morning QB. His indecisiveness cost people their lives. Taking Grant off then back on, or making a huge deal about the fight. The whole “don’t engage the enemy “ didn’t help either, especially when they attack you .

2.) People blamed Grant but Halleck made it clear to NOT engage .. also he wasn’t drunk he didn’t hear anything because of the “acoustic shadow”. It was a phenomena of sound getting trapped so you could be near and not hear a peep but someone far away could hear everything.

1:17 I love that quote from Sherman. I feel like he was one of a select few that truly understood, very early in the game, how horrific the war would become. I'd probably put Grant, Forrest, and McClellan in that list as well.

My family wore blue, but those feelings can be forgotten when considering the sacrifice on both side. RIP all that passed.

Geometric warfare at its worst. Sherman's brilliance is knowing when to sit in your defenses and letting your enemy bleed itself dry.

The god of battles favored the Union high command. Both Grant and Sherman were more exposed to enemy fire than in any other battle each fought in. Due to Beauregard's chief of staff mismanaging the army's dispositions, Johnston decided to lead from the front, and was fatally wounded without his personal surgeon present. Johnston's chivalry in sending him to treat some wounded Union prisoners turned out to be one of the most fateful decisions of the war.

Another great insight. No matter how much I read on the civil war you bring a new perspective to how a battle shapes with the animations.

So sick of people saying how wonderful Sherman was. Not proud of what he and his men did.
