In 1973, a film so horrifying and shocking and controversial was released to American movie theaters and worldwide, the Academy Award Winning motion picture….THE EXORCIST Starring Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow, Jason Miller, Lee J. Cobb, Kitty Winn and Linda Blair. Directed by William Friedkin. Based on the Best-Selling Novel by acclaimed and award-winning author William Peter Blatty.
This is the shooting Location in the midtown Manhattan area of New York City featured in a scene from the original film “THE EXORCIST” with Jesuit Priest Father Damien Karras as he takes the NYC (currently known as the MTA) Transit system at the 34th Street Pennsylvania (a.k.a. Penn) Subway Station to visit his ailing elderly mother. Damien Karras is seemingly startled at the attention of a sarcastic homeless beggar mocking his religious faith asking Father Karras to help him.
TRIVIA:
The Director of Photography Owen Roizman was none other than Friedkin's Cinematographer for his 1971 Academy Award Winning controversial motion picture "The French Connection". Roizman also photographed for the 1974 Action Crime-Drama "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three".
Incidentally, I seen this film when making its New York City evening premiere at the National Theater on 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue in Times Square at nighttime with a crowd of hundreds when I was young. But as reported by the News and Media: people fainted, had nervous breakdowns and broke out in mass hysteria. Don't remember that happened in this theatre.
