You’d think that an antivirus surrounded by so many controversies would die down… But it’s still kicking, and has been for 35 years now, making it older than most best antivirus options, and even Windows Defender! So I just have to do a McAfee review and figure out what's the deal with it. And if your PC comes with a pre-installed McAfee, don’t uninstall it just yet, perhaps there’s more to this antivirus than meets the eye.

🔦 McAfee security features

The main window immediately showcases which features are enabled or disabled, and you can change that in a couple of clicks - very intuitive. However, this concerns only main features, such as Antivirus protection, VPN, Data cleanup, ID protection, and tracker removal. To access other features, I had to open this side menu and scroll through the feature list, finding a Password manager, malware scanner, a firewall and more… So let’s talk about them.

VPN:
I want to highlight the fact that McAfee’s features have a surprising degree of quality to them. For instance, the VPN covers 48 countries and delivers a decent connection speed. Sure, some top providers like NordVPN or Surfshark would perform better, but McAfee can still rival smaller VPNs like PrivateVPN.

True Key:
The McAfee password manager called “True Key” is also a pleasure to work with. Not only does it securely keep passwords and evaluate their complexity, but there are also multiple 2-factor authentication options.

Identity protection:
I can’t ignore the ID protection either. Phishing and identity fraud are growing problems, and identity protection providers like AURA become more prominent. Meanwhile, McAfee had an ID protection feature for ages now, providing a full analysis of your online security, monitoring your data for leaks and breaches, and even offering up to 1 million USD of identity theft coverage.

🔏 McAfee antivirus security

I’ve been keeping an eye out for McAfee’s performance tests by AV-test and AV-comparatives, and despite some inconsistent results from last year, in 2025 McAfee performed really well, earning high marks from both security institutes.

However, that’s not enough for me, so I’ve put my own security on the line, and infected my PC with 10 malware files, to find out: is McAfee good enough to clean them out?

Turns out it can, after a deep scan, McAfee’s anti-malware features really shine. I have to be honest, I didn’t see it coming. It’s not rare for even top-level antiviruses like Bitdefender or Norton 360 to miss 1 or 2 zero-day malware files, but apparently, McAfee is not bad either! On the other hand, I should’ve expected that after realizing that a scan would take about 20 minutes and load my CPU completely. So it might be hard to utilize McAfee’s scan if you don’t dedicate half an hour for your scans.

It said that a normal gamejolt game was a virus, and it also never told me that I had virus even when I did have one, please don't get Mcafee.

Fun tip about Mcaffee... it doesn't actually check the files. All it does is notice it is new, gets a hash of it, and send it back to McAffe's servers for a determination there. this could take days.

There used to be a McAfee removal tool that was available as a download but that was years ago, circa Win 7. I used it to dump McAfee out of systems and it worked well. Prior to that the only way to get rid of it was to remove all of the files from the registry which could be daunting.

I bought a Sony laptop from Curry's here in the UK about 10 years ago. The salesman told me that i would be pestered by pop ups to buy McAfee antivirus as intel had bought them out and it was on the intel chip installed in my device. He told me there was a discount if i bought it so i accepted the offer. I got attacked by a virus on the same computer which took away my operating system which was Windows 10. I bought another lap top and just used Defender but had the free McAfee on my phone. I started getting pop ups on my laptop but ignored them in that time i had my Banks app installed on my phone and got a bill for £96 off McAfee. It had auto renewal on the bill so had to have my bank card changed by the banks anti-fraud team etc. My advice is ignore this McAfee it'll only give you stress.
