Machining a new Hydraulic Cylinder Head for CAT 651 Tractor Scraper | Part 2

Показать описание
This video is Part 2 of heavy duty machining a new hydraulic cylinder head for a CAT 651 Tractor Scraper apron cylinder. In this video we are machining the 2nd side of a 140mm chunk of steel plate. We are machining the internal seal grooves and boring internal diameter for the wiper seal before lots of interrupted cuts and chip breaking to turn down the outer diameter. Then roughing down the centre for a 45 degree nose taper before the finish passes. The cylinder head is then setup in a Vertex rotary indexing table on our milling machine to drill the 6 bolt holes. The part is completed with glass bead powder blasting for a satin finish.

I see 2 sets of skill here. The obvious is that there is a very skilled machinist working here. The less obvious is that the camera operator is really good. Smooth, gets nice shots, shows the process. Team work. Ver' naice!

When a machine part looks like a piece of art, you know the man making it has mastered his craft

Lovely work mate, the blasted piece in the final shots looked like a 3D rendered model! I really like watching rough chunks of metal turned into pieces of art like that...that would look good in any modern art gallery!

Hello from Washington State USA! I love your videos; I just wish there were more of them, and they were a bit longer. There's something magical about making something useful from a raw block of steel. I was a machinist back in the late 1960s through the 1980s, and I especially enjoy that you do all the work from lathe to mill to welding.

I've been watching your videos/educational tutorials for over a year now. I've been catchaing up on the videos from three years ago and a came across these four year old videos. The change in video quality is amazing, it's like watching a silent movie :). Homeless wasn't nearly as spoiled either. I'm not a machinist, but I've learned a lot watcing you. I have had machine work done occassionally and I'm much pickier about the work now. I do weld occassionally and like watching your technic.

It's always a surprise when I find I missed a video. You are at the top of the list.

We do cylinder rebuilds at work but get any machining done offsite. Great to see how it’s all done. Look forward to more videos!

Amazing to watch the amount of metal coming off of the blank. That lathe was taking out metal like an ice cream scoop from a container full of vanilla. Fantastic work!
