I actually once overheard a coworker talking about how she told her DAUGHTER that no one would ever love her like her mom. It was 20 years ago, and I'm still weirded out by that mentality.

It’s called emotional ince$t and it’s more common than you’d think. Most men don’t even realize it’s happening because the mom has had that mentality their whole lives. You can’t get them to see it without therapy. When I was dating and the mom would act like this I saw it as a huge red flag. Even if I really liked him I would explain how I felt and it would SEEM like he understood, and then his mom would convince him to break up with me because “She’s not the one sweetie.” Honestly, dodged a bullet.

I saw a "boy mom" post recently where the mom was literally saying she was heartbroken that she was raising her son and that another woman would get to marry him and "take him away" from her after all her hard work. She got torched in the replies but kept doubling down and snapping at anyone who said that was bizarre, and that she should be embarrassed about posting it.

My mom is exactly this. She’s extremely over-the-top and always saying really unsettling things (the amount of times she’s called me “yummy” or something to that effect would probably jail her), and refuses to stop when I ask. She’s also a massive hypocrite, since she always treats me like I’m an infant but then screams and insults like crazy the minute she sees me on my phone (she’s randomly decided I’m a phone addict by blatantly exaggerating the time I spend on it) or get a minor thing wrong on the loads of work she throws at me (she’s a lawyer who refuses to hire help for some reason). She makes me feel like absolute garbage and then claims we have a good relationship built on “unconditional love”.

I fear the person I would’ve become if she had full custody of me, but thankfully my other parent is sane and just amazing all around, still present and loving while still acknowledging boundaries.

Tl, dr: These boy moms exist, and sometimes, the relationship they say they have with their son is not just one-sided but only when it’s convenient for them.
