Its FATHER is a C96 which was the FIRST SUCCESSFUL semi-auto pistol, there were a couple of other pistols made before it BUT notice I put SUCCESSFUL semi-auto pistol. I did own an early production model (pre1915) commercial all matched in 7.63Mauser but had it relined to 9mm because it had a horrible bore. It was a REALLY COOL PISTOL.😉👍😁

I am always fascinated by the story of young Winston Churchill, who as a British lieutenant, served as a news correspondent in the Sudan in 1899. He had purchased and carried a 1896 Mauser, one of the early models. It did not have a detachable magazine. It was loaded either with a stripper clip or one cartridge at a time in its internal, 10-round magazine. Churchill participated in one of the smaller battles around Ombdurman. The British cavalry charged with sabers and were met with a hidden line of Mahdi tribal warriors. Churchill holstered his saber because he had an old shoulder injury preventing him from using a sword properly. He pulled out his Mauser and shot every Mahdi dervish that ran at him with a sword. The Mauser 7.63 round was admired for its velocity and flat trajectory but criticized for insufficient stopping power unless the bullet hit bone. In the movie, "Young Winston", it claims Winston lost his Mauser in South Africa when he accidentally left it behind on a train while escaping pursuing Boer militia men.
