I was assigned to one of these back in the mid 1960s when I was in the Army, 3rd Infantry division. I loved driving it. The one I drove had a 50mm machine gun mounted in top. I'd love to be able to drive one again,

They were junk P.O.S. gutless 283 pushing 7 tons. Saw them broken more often than in a running condition. Laid out the rubber band track twice on the autobahn. Slow and cold in the winter. Would have been better used tuned into beer cans.

So one would only imagine this thing covered with camo nets moving forward of a column with assorted weapons probably some painted in camouflage paint sceams looking for enemies in armored mechanized formations, The - M-114 was also amphibious like the M-113 APC armored personnel carrier, very kool 😎

Incredible. An M-114 that actually moves under it's own power and doesn't have to be towed by an M-113 or a VTR. LOL

Back in 1971 I took my Scout training on one of those M-114's it had a 20 mm cannon main gun on the cupola. I've never seen one throw a track and I always thought they were fun to drive because they were fast. It was also amphibians. It had water steer gear and you had to remember after coming out of the water to switch it back into road steer. A lot of new recruits would forget to do this and when they would try to round a curve the steering was so sensitive in that mode it would just start spinning in circles. lol

Light and fast as all getout when they ran. They swam okay when the M2 50 cal was mounted (I swam them). With the 20 mm mounted they were lopsided to the right side and there was only one exact position for the barrel over the driver’s head that it wouldn’t sink them. Kind of scary.

April 23, 2018----Thanks for the video as this is the first running one of these I've ever seen. There was one of these stationed out front of the Alaskan Army national guard building not far from the Anchorage airport. This was when I was stationed at Elmendorf 77-79.

If I win the billion dollar lottery; forget about the fast car, and big mansion; a couple of tanks and other track vehicles and a large piece of land to play in will be ideal.

Ft Drum, NY, 1987. I was a TC on a 1/26 Cav M48A5. Range control had just towed an M114 out onto the range that morning at about 600 yards. Our tank was the first up that day and I had the gunner hit the targe middle, just below the lights. He fired a 105mm HEAT round. It was a blue training round, made the same shape and weight as a service round, but with no explosive effect. The hit drove the engine through the crew compartment and out the rear of the vehicle. We, the crew, could see the daylight through the vehicle.

Had a M-113 in the 1970’s, in Germany. They were phasing out the M-114. Not to many kind words for it. Still an interesting vehicle.
