The magic was considered a 'fail' and removed from competition because it was deterministic. going from the beginning state to the ending state was 1 set of moves that you just had to memorize and get faster at. there were no decisions to be made, just do the steps as fast as possible.

The reason the WCA dropped Rubik's Magic was because it had ceased being a puzzle. It has only one starting position - no scrambled state. So all contestants knew the sequence of moves and were just executing it as fast as possible. There was no figuring-out going on.
