I see Sabo as new and improved Ace. But seriously tho, he wasn't random. I remember Luffy saying something like "You're my only brother left" or "You're the only person left who I can call my brother" to Ace at Marineford. At that time i thought, wait so he had more brothers? And then Sabo happened.

If you look at the manga, you can see somebody wearing sabo's hat during the Luffy near execution in Loguetown, and when they show the sake of trading between him and ace, you can see the shadow of a third cup in the panel

He does add stuff in last second a lot of times
The story was originally supposed to be East Blue -> Alabasta -> Warlords -> End

Sabo is also one of the coolest characters in the show tho he even makes one of my least favorite design choices work the top hat

Honestly I like everything about sabo except the amnesia thing. I think hes a cooler character than Ace, his dedication to the revolution is really dope. his line about being okay with the world thinking he killed SPOILERS as long as it stokes the flames of revolution, legit one of the hardest statements in the series.

I feel like sabos lack of introduction till after marineford does work in the sense that luffy was far less capable of understanding and controlling his emotions as a child so he would most likely leave Sabo out of his stories with ace because it's a deep scar that he was scared of opening. But your point is solid, but hey luffy gained his emotional intelligence somehow and a childhood of fighting isn't quite gonna teach that

That’s what I’m saying, like Ace was so planned out compared to Sabo, and the second Ace dies it turns out Luffy also has a second brother we’ve never seen before that gets the flame fruit and we’re just supposed to go along with it.

Actually in the manga when Luffy is about to get executed by buggy at louge town you can see sabo in the audience.
