ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
It is unfathomable to think of jazz without Ron Carter. The prolific bassist started playing the cello but was often met with racism and told that Black musicians did not play classical music or perform in orchestras. While the pervasive times forced him to switch instruments, both arduous fans and future bassists alike remain indebted to him. Over six decades later, Carter is now synonymous with jazz bass. He was an integral part of Miles’s Second Great Quintet for five years and would ultimately appear on over 2,200 albums, garnering him a Guinness World Record as the most recorded bassist in jazz history. Among those albums include his extensive and seminal period at Blue Note Records and CTI in the 1960s & 1970s. At 87, Carter shows no few signs of slowing down, continuing to record and tour across the globe. As leader, Carter has formed many groups over the years. His newest band Foursight comprises a stellar arsenal of players — pianist Rene Rosnes, Jimmy Greene on tenor saxophone, and drummer Payton Crossley — for an evening of straight-ahead jazz at Poland’s Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa Festival in March 2020. Carter features several of his original compositions during the hour-long set (“Mr. Bow-tie,” “595,” “Saguaro”) while also honoring his formative bandleader with “Flamenco Sketches” and “Seven Steps to Heaven.” One of the set’s highlights features an improvised solo from the bass virtuoso.

I remember seeing Ron Carter here in L.A 🌴 at the now defunct Jazz Bakery, He is real tall like his bass, he always took time to talk and sign all my vinyl! Thank Ron!
