My strategy when I used to work for project managers was, "These are my current 3 priorities; which one of them would you like me to postpone to try and fit this in?"

and also it is helpful to delay commitments. if you are not sure about the status or complexity of a feature or project, then the worst thing you can do is make a commitment early on before doing due diligence to analyze and fully comprehend the system you are working on or bug you need to solve
