Hospitality customers can drive people to a breaking point. I hit it off with a Husband and Wife team that had purchased and were running a small roadside motel in a tourist area. The wife and I had great chats whenever I called in to reserve a room, and while I was there. Then, one time, she told me that she was glad that I had come so that she could say goodbye. The property was closing escrow that next week. Her husband was going back into retirement, she had already found a new full-time job to work for a few more years before her retirement, and they were selling and getting out of the hospitality business. This was in the late '90s, even before we called people, "Karen." She had been dealing with so many nightmare customers that it wasn't fun anymore. The customers had killed her joy and their dream. I often wonder how they are doing, decades later. She finished like the gracious and hospitable lady that she was. No screaming fits from her, at least not in front of customers. 🤭

That's why there's no more nice older charter sailboats in Miami. It was actually really affordable to charter a pretty decent 4bd 2 bath boat back in 2009.

Price yourself out of the riffraff. When my dad raised his prices as a contractor, guess what happened. Fewer hours worked and higher net take home pay. Fewer jobs to manage. No more stingy penny pinching clients that are merely under the illusion they can afford a renovation, when they can't in reality. No more scrutiny and micro management from clients. A wait-list of clients trying to get in his schedule. More custom jobs that are fun and creative. If you're proficient to a certain level in your field, raise your price. If you're at an office job, find another that pays more. You will rise above the bullshit if you're skillful and professional enough. Then no more drunk assholes on your boat.

Working charter yachts is tough. I heard Russians tip in empty vodka bottles. When I was a chef on a quail plantation I had an offer to go cook on a 150ft expedition yacht, but it wasn't a charter, it was one man and his family and whoever they flew out to hang out. I didn't do it, but one family is the only way to work on a boat like that. If it's a nice family, that can be a roll of the dice too

Yep. I have had an airbnb/vrbo property for 2 years now and after this summer I am DONE. Closing up shop. People suck. I've had people throw red wine on my walls, break furniture, complain about ANYTHING if they think it'll get them a free stay, etc. Not everyone one, but definitely more than what you'd be willing to put up with to where it is distinctly not enjoyable, no matter what the profits are. The hospitality business is sooo hard because some people are genuinely awful.

I hate customer service jobs. Most people are cool but you get some people that are just cancers. Worst part you can't tell them to fuck off because part of your job is to be professional
