“If you see a player making that move, just report them” my 200 ELO ass trying to figure out what I did wrong.

Hey Levi,

I just wanna say, your dog is a god at chess.

No, that’s a very normal beginner move. Basically the player says “this position is too complicated, I can’t calculate it and I will look stupid if I make my position worse. So, I will just make progress somewhere else”

Chess engines are showing us the way. Hating them is equivalent to hating the truth.

I mean someone could play that if they don't know what else to move. It is not a bad move. Plus, white is so well guarded that there aren't any other meaningful moves anyways. This move opens a space for black d7 knight and a potential black bishop to a6 for pins.

If any human plays a5, he's Magnus.

Well, at my elo my opponent wouldn't see the threat and legitimately play it thinking its a good move

A5 is a logical move trying to carve out the c5 square for you knight and opening up a file if the b4 pawn is reinforced (it should be) by trading, which would follow the principle of trying to open up the position ideally in the center or if not possible on the other side of the board when you are getting squeezed on one side, its not even a super high level move dude

this is called the "what the fuck is happening my brain is melting" move

a5 is very interesting; since black has a fortress, there are 5 logical options (in order of which ones I saw first). The worst, takes, leads to the pawn recapturing, and black can develop the queen (note that developing the queen before trading the pawns wasn’t good because of nd5. However, without the pressure on b6, black is free to develop the queen). Now option 2/3 (which are the best) are a3 and Bd7, respectively. Now if a3/Bd7, Qc8 and black has developed the queen, and gains a time so black doesn’t need to worry about b6. Now finally Ng3. Nxg3, hxg3 (to open the file) …Qc7 developing the queen, and Rf2 and f4! If he takes with en passant, Nxf3, and black gains a pawn. If exf5 exf5, and according to the engine its even, however imo, black is better. TLDR: It actually makes a lot of sense. It address blacks 2 problems; the queen and the pawn on b6.

If look at the board for 10 seconds u can see that A5 is the only move that makes any sort of progress for black and it takes advantage of the lack of pieces on the queen side

a5 tries to create an attack on queenside because black can't do anything on kingside

The idea of a5 is that if bxa5 then nc5 and nd3 is possible...this not only moves the knight together but develops pressure on queen too

It's kinda funny that when we think we blundered Levi believe we are cheating.
