Mastering: Tape Or No Tape?

So I've had the pleasure of mastering a few projects in a row lately. As a producer my work can jump around from #recording to #mixing to #mastering - but when I get to focus on one task I get to do more experimentation. In this case the last album I mastered was an acoustic blues album with a lot high frequency energy and very little low end (no bass or drums) and I found using a #analogtape sim #plugin worked really well. The next project was a full #pop #countrymusic mix and I did a full mastering using a tape sim but decided that I didn't like it so much in that context, so I did another pass and left the tape out.

In this video I talk about the differences play some examples. I really let my ears guide me so this isn't about laying down rules about what's right or wrong. It's more about why I liked what I liked and let's see if you agree?

If you can please try to listen on a good speakers or headphone as some of the difference I'm discuss can be subtle.

As always thanks so much for your interest in my videos. Please subscribe and like if you're so inclined.
