Norton has caused me more pain than a virus ever could

I work on the Microsoft Defender team and seeing this short brightened my day.

Agreed, and have good security practice. Like not clicking random links

Very much love how uninstalling Malwarebytes isn't about it being bad at it's job or something like that, it just isn't necessary. Like you call in the specialist, have him work his magic, and then he leaves. He doesn’t need to stick around.

As every cyber security professor told me: "The weakest link in every computer is the user". The only surefire way to keep viruses off your computer is to know how to not get them on there in the first place!

It's a special thing to find someone who knows their stuff so well and speak with such directness and confidence. Thank you, Thor.

For those who don't know, Microsoft bought AVG (which was the best antivirus at the time) and incorporated it into Windows, giving us the Windows Defender we have today.

Your strongest anti-virus is knowledge on how to not fuck up your computer by clicking weird links

This is exactly correct. Found a root kit on a laptop in 2014 with Malwarebytes, not my machine. A little spot check every once in a while goes a long way.

completed a computer science course in college. my someone asked my professor the same question. his response was "you. learn what a phishing scam looks like. what a trojan link looks like. you are the first, and last line of defence"
my personal opinion after graduating was exactly that. and if you do get a virus, a scrubber might work, but only real option is "nuke it from orbit. only way to be sure".
graduated almost 14 years ago, only ever had 1 "medium level threat", and i nuked that windows instal first thing. 2 hours of a headache, is better then any potential threat on the system

I used to work for a computer repair shop and anytime we came across Norton Security we would uninstall it and that would fix 90% of their problems. Everything from a slow computer or certain application not working, fixed

The best antivirus is enabling the settings on browsers so they ask to download things before they do.

As someone who has been using computers since the cretaceous period, I approve of this message! Nothing more needed!

As a kid from the 90s this feels so wrong, but as I have been running just Windows Defender for the past year or so, it rings so true.
