As a person who suffers from anxiety and asthma my dogs/my mom's dogs/my sister's dog (we have 7 dogs) they all (mostly the females) usually lay beside me when I have a bad dream and I wake up panicking. Or if I randomly start having trouble breathing and I start to panic they usually lay beside me to calm me down.

I'm not a professional dog trainer, but I cut down on my dog's barking by paying attention to her. When she would bark, I would get up, while shushing her or telling her to be quiet. I would lean foward and listen intently. Since the dog heard things I couldn't, I had no problem standing up relaxed and saying it's OK.

Dogs bark as a warning. By paying attention to the warning, checking it out as shown to her by body language, then relaxing and letting her know it was Ok, my dog could relax.

It can be frustrating sometimes when you're comfortably settled in, but since it worked for me, this method was worth it.
