n. The base of a shape is the lower portion of the shape. For a geometric shape, like a triangle for example, the base is the bottom side of the triangle or the side of the triangle closest to the bottom of the page. For a three-dimensional shape, the base is the bottom surface. So for a pyramid with a square base and triangular sides, the base is the surface the shape is currently sitting on, in this case a square.
