SMA Quickie: Solenoid Failure Testing w/ Heat 🔥

preview_player
Показать описание
In this video I show you a testing method that can show you quickly if you have a solenoid failing when it is getting hot. Some solenoids are a pain to get to and might only fail when they are hot. Sometimes we need to bring on the heat and see if we can catch it in the act.

I love how I end up having an issue on my car, fixing it, and then about 2-4 weeks later you or Ray make a video about that very issue.

You can also test the other direction by putting components in the freezer for 10 minutes. Temperature can cause many intermittent problems. Thanks Eric, great quick tip.

Only way Eric could have obtained a faster diagnosis is to get the missus to do it. That's what my missus says when we say it took "such and such" a time. She always tells the folks when they come up for a coffee and cake, it would have taken half the time if she did it. PS. She is lucky to know where to turn the power on in the shed. Great tip, Eric! Temperature has all kinds of unpredictable effects on failing electric and electronic devices - sometimes the problem only shows when cold, sometimes when hot.

I tested electronic products for thermal intermittents like that for years. Another way we did it was wait for the part to heat up under normal conditions, see the failure or problem and then spray some freon (commonly called circuit cooler) on the suspected part and see if the problem goes away. Great, informative video as always!

Great Quick Tip Thursday Eric O @South Main Auto Repair LLC

Great tip for sure. Thermal swings can effect solenoids as well as circuit boards. I use a heat gun to stress them and see what changes I see.

My sister had a crank sensor like that would work when the engine was cold and run ok. But wouldn’t start when the engine was hot and it had soaked up some heat …
Nice video educational as always

Amazing how quickly the problem went away once it cooled. Imagine that could have you running around for ages if it's still on the car.
