🧽 Things I Wish I Knew About Cleaning When I First Started 🧼

1️⃣ ALWAYS dust first to remove buildup, making cleaning easier instead of just pushing debris around.🧹

2️⃣ Let the product sit for a few seconds or longer before scrubbing or wiping.⏳ It needs time to work, or you'll end up scrubbing more for the same result!🧽

3️⃣ Use a portable cleaning caddy with all your supplies to make cleaning more efficient and quicker!🧺

4️⃣ Don't forget to clean unseen top areas!🔝 The tops of doors, above cabinets, and other hidden spots often get missed. Ignoring these means dust and debris just fall onto areas you've already cleaned, causing double duty cleaning!🥴

5️⃣ Invest in good quality cleaning tools to save time and effort in the long run.🛠️

6️⃣ Maintain your vacuum and other cleaning tools at least once a month to keep them lasting longer and working like new!🤩

Knowing and doing these cleaning tips will help you cut back on cleaning time AND keep your home in better condition! 🏡✨

Decluttering is honestly the greatest cleaning tip. All cleaning is so much easier with LESS!

When cleaning any sticky or crusty mess (ie; coffee zones or inside of the fridge) soak a cloth in warm soapy water and lay it down damp on the mess. Then come back in 10-15 minutes and it'll wipe right off. No scrubbing. Saves me sooo much time.

My grandma taught me ALWAYS to clean rooms from top to bottom - work smart, not hard 😅 It really irks me now when I see people cleaning at the bottom (vacuuming first!), then at the top (dusting), then at the bottom for the second time (of course) - who on earth does that??? 🤔🤔🤔

If you place newspaper or something similar along the tops of your cabinets they will collect all the dust and grime then you can just lift them up and throw them away when cleaning up there. Then replace them of course.

Keep a separate set of cleaners and tools on each floor so you don’t have to lug stuff upstairs. Also use a plastic caddy so you can clean it out when it gets grimy

That little basket of cleaning supplies is so ideal and a good reminder for me. I have cleaning supplies on every floor and even some in the laundry room as spare.

I find it overwhelming & also you might finish with one type of product and then take it from another floor & next thing you know nothing is where it’s supposed to be.

Just using one basket and bringing it from floor to floor is so much better. Will be utilizing this in the future! Thank you! 🙏

To clean horizontal window blinds: Get an old sock damp (water or cleaner), put it on like a puppet, pinch each slat in the "mouth" part, and slide your hand back & forth.

Need a custom crevice tool for your vacuum hose? Use a TP tube... it's reusing leftovers AND recyclable afterwards (if you cut off any ends that are too gunked up).
Put a nylon or thin sock on the end of the vac hose to suck up small things (pins, tacks, sequins, etc) that you want to keep, or so they don't get sucked in and ruin your machine.

Put on a rubber glove (like the ones for washing dishes), get it damp with water, and wipe your hand across the couch, your clothes, etc. to pick up hair from the dog/cat/ you/etc.

If you need a funnel, you can make one out of foil. If it needs to be bigger/ more solid, cut off the top (or bottom, if you want a long one) of a plastic water/soda bottle that you're done using. Both options can be rinsed & recycled afterwards (depending on your area).

For anyone who doesn’t have a dishwasher (or working dishwasher) remove all of the excess food and / or liquid from all of your dishes, rinse them then let them soak in soap and hot water while you are cleaning another area of your house. This will help to soften any stuck on items before scrubbing them down if you weren’t able to get to them in a timely manner. I find using Scotch Brite Dobie Pads work well for hard stuck on items with this method.

I found using my husband's old Jeans that he was getting rid of. I would cut off the legs open up the back seam up the center. I would be able to put a lot of my cleaning products in his pockets. That's what I used reused his jean legs for rags so not only did I have an apron. I also was able to repurpose the jeans for cleaning hard stained floors that had a good texture to clean off my cabinet. I love it!😊

Dusting first is a great advice, I started to dust my shoes before cleaning them and now they look brand new😊 I also like to wear an apron with pockets while cleaning, I can use the pockets for cleaning products, some items that need to be placed somewhere else, etc

Two tips I learned:

1. When wiping surfaces, spray the cleaning solution onto the towel you are going to use rather than onto the surface you are going to wipe -- it saves a lot of solution in the end.

2. Name-brand cleaning solutions/chemicals are often unnecessary and potentially hazardous. Try using more mild, common household ingredients (like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, or dish soap) that are much safer to handle and get the job done just as well!

One thing I learned from Mack at Midwest Magic Cleaning that works well is actually homemade. He mixes 3/4 of 70% isopropyl alcohol, a teaspoon or so of Dawn Dish Soap and the rest with water. It’s great for cleaning countertops, floors, windows, etc but not wood. It’s especially good for people allergic or sensitive to bleach.

Rinse dishes if you can't wash them immediately. You can sweep up toys even on carpet with a broom and dust pan. Have kids play toy basketball having a large tub to toss toys in. Clean pet hair off surfaces with either a pair of rubber gloves or a damp sponge. Use contact paper to remove pet hair. Use magic erase sponges on glass Pyrex dishes.

Great tips, however, I would never use any brush or anything I use anywhere else to dust even the lid of my toilet seat. That all is done with kitchen roll and cleaner and then put straight in the bin as it obviously clogs toilets. It is harder as I'm wiping up more dust but I can't do it any other way. Maybe OTT but that's me 😬

Pro tip, instead of using bristle attachments on vacuum to remove dust or dirt from cracks and crevices, try paint brushes of different firmness, brushing the dirt in the direction of the handheld attachment. Paintbrush is easier to get in most places

What vacuum cleaners do you recommend? I could see you were able to take yours apart to clean and I cant do that with mine 😢

More of a tidy tip than a cleaning one - grab a laundry basket, start in one section and put anything that doesn't belong into the basket. Empty the basket section by section (ie empty all the bathroom things together, then move to kitchen, etc). That way you aren't running around the house like a headless chook trying to tidy!
