This idea never seemed so attractive after learning about tree wells, and that was coming on top of the obvious collision risk!
For safety alternating spaced pairs probably need to ski past their stationary spaced counterparts in short stints. If each person can pause for the others next to something approximating a tree-well (not too close!) then they can both focus on and avoid a danger for themselves while marking and being in close response to one of the risks for their mates.
