Tolstoy's advice to a young woman on the meaning and purpose of life.
One day, a woman who had read Tolstoy's works approached him:
She asked, What should I do in order to become a better person?
Tolstoy replied, Go to the marketplace and find someone who has it worse than you. Then, help them in any way you can.
The woman followed Tolstoy's advice and went to the marketplace.
She saw a man selling vegetables, who looked tired and worn out.
She approached him and offered to buy all his vegetables so that he could go home early and rest.
The man was surprised and grateful, and he accepted the offer.
The woman felt good about helping someone and decided to continue doing so.
She started volunteering at a local charity, donating to the poor, and helping her neighbors.
She felt a sense of purpose and fulfillment in her life that she had never experienced before.
Tolstoy's advice had helped her see that the key to becoming a better person was not to focus on oneself but to help others.
