The singer wrote this song for all his buddies he served with in Vietnam. He said he wrote it because most of his buds got "dear John's while over there fighting the war. I never served with him but I was there when he was and yes I got that terrible letter on mid watch in 1968.

I'm 77yrs old, Vietnam veteran and I got my dear john on boat watch in 1968. A buddy brought it to me and said " hey Land (last name is Land) you got a letter from your girlfriend. " I couldn't wait to read it! It knocked all the air and life out of me. To add insult to injury I found out she got married 3+ months before she wrote the letter. The first time I heard "Can't you see" it brought back the hate & hurt. I'll always remember her and will always HATE her. Toy nail our feelings when he wrote this anthem for the Dear John boys.
