I finally played Borderlands (Risk of Rain has a chance!)

after Gearbox's acquisition of Risk of Rain I decided to go back and check out the games they actually made...

BL2 had a solid story imo. I think it is worth a story play through fwiw.

The basic gunplay in early BL2 definitely leaves a lot to be desired, but once you have a build going (and start using higher rarity guns), you won't notice it much at all. TBH I feel like the Gearbox starter guns should be blue rarity, would do wonders for the early gamefeel.

bl2 is one of my favorite games. put thousands of hours into replaying it, something i never found myself doing with the other games in the series

I think the reason the characters talk so much during the game is because Handsome Jack did it, and everyone loved it (because they love the character) so they tried doing it again to much less success since the characters in bl3 are less interesting.

Early game Bl2 is like early game League of Legends in a lot of ways. The game just doesn't feel as good when your gun does no damage, poor accuracy, poor fire rate etc. That being said, mid-late game Bl2 is also like mid-late game League where your build starts to come together, you start getting the weapons you want. If you enjoy that feeling of rogue-like sense of powering up, I'd highly recommend.

After finishing the game for the first time with my friends we each gave it our score on a scale of x/10. we have played ALL of the other borderlands games before. We all said that the game would be like a solid 8-9/10 if not for the story which brings it down to like a 6-7/10. We also found the fact that our player characters talk very amusing.

The best part about the gunplay in borderlands 2 in my opinion is the loader enemies. Shooting off the limbs of these loaders in quick succession and destroying them is actually VERY satisfying. This type of enemy design was not present in borderlands 3, but I wish that they can use it for risk of rain 2 enemy designs. Bringing breakable parts into the enemy design will improve the satisfaction of the game quite a bit.

I prefer tiny tinas wonderland as apposed to BL3 but I love the fantasy and spells so that’s my bias

The thing is their track record outside of Bordelands is pretty damn bad. Look into Battleborn or Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Yeah, bl2 has a more basic early game, but I think it's more varied and replayable than 3. The pacing, farms, environments, humor, characters, and enemies are great. I get why some people prefer 3, but since I'm a sucker for plot, bl3 is beyond frustrating. But I do really like Moze's skill trees...

yeah the funny thing about this is that the reason everyone says borderlands 2 is better than the other ones is actually specifically because the story is more interesting and the bad guy that talks to you is actually legitimately an interesting and entertaining character. all of your criticism is valid but in that specific instance of saying the borderlands games are all about jokes and looting and shooting, that would totally be true of all the games that came out after 2 but the first and second game were toned down a bit and the writing was actually a lot better then they kinda went off the deep end in the pre sequel onwards.

My guy, if you haven't gotten into endgame builds then you have no idea what you're talking about. Borderlands 3 has arguably the most insane batshit builds in the history of gaming.

the only reason i'm worried is because the triple a industry has gone down the shitter and usually when a company says their working on "a love letter to the franchise" they usually royally f it up.

As someone who loves the Borderlands series, I mostly agree with you. The only thing I would say is that BL2's gunplay gets a lot more interesting later on in the game because there are so many unique-feeling guns that enable builds/playstyles. I think it picks up as soon as you get to the Bloodshot Stronghold because you have a few cooler weapons by that point.

love the content, ive been playing borderlands since i was 4. Its a struggle to get into by yourself so props to you. i would like to mention that the story is mainly found in the second game and in side quests, its more a story you absorb through videos about the lore than you do playing through. Sometimes i find myself getting attached to characters that had the slightest butterfly effect on the main story.

Despite the crazy amount of guns in BL2; I usually ran up and stabbed things things with a buzzaxe cause I eat glue for a light snack.
