I'm kicking off my next generation home lab with this first look in to my choice for an ESXi 8 host. I plan to evolve this host into a #vmware #vsan ESA cluster with #intel Optane drives.

There will be more videos to come as this series evolves!

I am currently in the process of replacing a T5810 that I upgraded with a E5-2678V3 with an Epyc 7302 + supermicro board. For what I paid for it (about $200 + another $100 for the CPU upgrade) it has been a great little machine even given all the quirks with it being a Dell. HP Z series are also good second hand machines for budget home labbers if you aren't rack mounting and want something fairly quiet/expandable and (relatively) inexpensive. I'm more an open source guy but it's always cool to see what people are running and why, thanks for the vid!

these systems are rapidly aging, full of unwanted dell proprietary 'goodness' and basically overpriced for what you get but since all comp prices are currently overpriced it is basically status quo - you really don't even need a video card - they can run headless just fine, they are power hungry and not that efficient compared to newer cpu so tco is higher, roi lower, also by sucumbing to vmware ecosystem you get vendor lockin - most smb only need basic virt that works so vmworkstation will work fine for them no need to use other products but they have open source options as well which just work but have a higher learning curve initially - basically accurate - it is hard to find platforms that run a bunch of ram and have enough pci lanes - these machine fill that niche and are quiet unlike rack mount servers - much nicer - good content and overview!
