#Subwoofer #Bass #6000watts
I was contacted by Massive Audio a couple of months ago to check out their new subwoofer line, the "BOA" subs. These are 6000 watt RMS subs available in 12 and 15" diameters. These subs have 4" voice coils and massive motor structures. In this video, I take a closer look at the BOA121, the 12" strontium magnet version.

Note: This is NOT a sponsored video! Massive Audio sent me the subwoofer free of charge knowing I would provide my honest opinion and feedback of the speaker. I accepted as it would be helpful in future videos testing large amplifiers with a subwoofer capable of handing the tremendous power of some amps I test.

Derek everyone in the car audio world can't thank you enough for what you do! Having said that, how can you test a 6kw sub on 2.5kw?

Massive Audio Subwoofers are hands down some of the best in the industry. I had their top of the line 15's back in 2004 - 2005 and I thought my vehicle at the time was going to come apart.

That magnet looks like a small spare tire. 75 lbs! A perfect size, I like it.

Back when I competed, we would hook one amp per voice coil. We then made subs that had quad coils, so 4 amplifiers per sub. This was back before amps were strapable

The man, the myth, the Big D. Always been a fan of Massive Audio. Glad to see they're still doing big things. Excited to see what you do with that monster.

you could maybe show us how loud with a decibel meter, run a sweep from 10 Hz to 100, etc.

Judging from the DC resistance of the voice coil, and the impedance shown by the dynamic meter, that driver is very reactive, owing to the huge magnet. I would definitely recommend driving the woofer with a switch mode class "D" amplifier. The current can get far enough out of phase with the voltage, that a linear amplifier output stage could easily get out of it's safe operating area, by having the current hit, while there is a lot of voltage across the transistors. This woofer could burn out a standard analogue amplifier.
Judging by the simulated analogue meters on that Rockford Fosgate amp, it looks like you could use large stiffening capacitors on the supply to that amp. Is that amp Class "D"? Taking current from the batteries in peaks suggests that it might be.

I really like the Massive subwoofers! I used to have 2 of the Hippo 15's with dual 2 ohm voice coils. Very loud and clean.

Strap it! Strap it! Strap it! Wow that is a serious sub! A 70lb sub that requires a 100lb box! A 4 cubic box is not small and you would want it to have at least 1" board. Another great review! Thanks brother!

$1100 for sub then I look at my phone, can't believe I paid $1000 for a cell phone.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s was my hayday for car audio. The first car I had was a Ford Fiesta with some cheap pyramid subs running in a box retrofitted from an old plywood dresser. It sounded awful, but I still cranked it up with my Coustic amp and JVC head unit. A year or so later I had a Ford Maverick with two 12" Vortex subs and four 10" Vortex subs being powered by a US Amps 100 HCA(I believe was the model number). My poor rear window seal did everything it could to cling to the rear window as the SPL attempted to push it out. The fleck stone spray paint I painted my dash with peeled off as the dash flexed. Ahhh, those were the days where the boom costed way more than the car.

I can still hear Sir Mixalot rapping about his "hootie" and it seemed almost as if he was rapping about, "My Hooptie".... Good times...
