For those who don't know. Edward was killed by Reginald Birch. Haythams mentor and the man you speak to in the Opera during the tutorial of AC3. Haytham would find out the truth about his father's death and in turn seek revenge. This is the reason Charles attacked Connors village as Haytham was in England rescuing his sister and plotting revenge. Story comes in full swing when you look at the timeline. AC3, 4, Rogue, and Unity would never have happened without the other. Miss when there was passion in the series

Strange. Usually when I get this cutscene, it goes “Desynchronized” right after the soldier cuts Edward down the last time

When the soldier kills Blackbeard in fact he cuts his head off. The NPC head stills there, the camera just hide it, Ubisoft wasn't a big fan of amputations at all back then.

Edward did die actually, after he retired from the assaisan order he was living with his family when his best friend betrayed him and sent masked men to kill him we just never see it happen
