Wild Ponies at Grayson Highlands and Mount Rogers, Virginia Appalachian Trail

Compilation of some photos and video I've collected from many visits to the high country of the southern Virginia Blue Ridge region. In this area you'll find most of Virginia's highest peaks, including the state high point at Mount Rogers. This is some of Virginia's most spectacular scenery. Another attraction is the "wild" ponies that roam the high meadows around Grayson Highlands State Park and the adjacent Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, a part of the Jefferson National Forest. The ponies are not truly wild, as they are managed by the Forest Service and other groups, and some are quite accustomed to seeing people. Hiking the trails around Rhododendron Gap and Wilburn Ridge are your best chance of seeing the ponies. Thanks for watching!

Excellent! I have been waiting for this one. You have captured some awesome videos and photographs of the ponies. The music was just perfect for the Highlands area. I really enjoyed the video as it reminded me of my visit. I liked your version making it all ponies all the time. Well done. Thanks for sharing your visits over the years to the Grayson Highlands and Mount Rogers.

Great slide show and filming! Sure were a lot of pregnant mares. I really enjoyed the music you chose for this, too!

Sleeves and I had a discussion about these ponies not long ago. Dollars to Doughnuts these are Chincoteague ponies. They can be a little aggressive. Thanks for the beautiful video showing these majestic creatures.

I've always liked Grayson Highlands State Park. Like a little dab of Montana placed in the corner of southwestern Virginia.

Good idea making the pony video from past years. Did the early settlers bring the ponies to this area?

Awesome! I’m going to Grayson next weekend and was wondering the best access by vehicle to see the ponies without having to hike for miles? My kids are thru hiking the AT, actually ahead of Sleeves who I’m following also! Any info you could give me would be so appreciated!
