we played another version in the last few days of school every year. there were more roles and it was a bit more complicated:
the townspeople:

the doctor: exactly the same but can't heal the same person twice in a row so he isn't invincible

the detective: he will choose a person and the moderator will give a thumbs up or down to say if they're the mafia or not. then he goes back to sleep

the sniper/sheriff: can choose someone to kill but if they are wrong they will die. can only kill 2 people. they can also skip and choose nobody.

the armor wearer? (couldn't translate the name): has 2 lives unless voted out and everyone will know the role after the first life

the mayor/cowboy: so in this version the roles of dead people aren't announced but the mayor can tell the moderator to announce how many mafias and townspeople are left but not the roles. this can be done when the mayor is dead if more than half the people want to but only once (twice if there is no mayor) and only at the very start of the day.

normal people: normal people

the mafia:

the godfather: the person that tells the moderator who to kill and if the detective choses him he can't say anything against him or vote for him. if the godfather is killed or voted out the other mafias have to agree on who to kill like in the video.

dr lecter: the doctor but for the mafia

the reporter: the detective but for the mafia

normal mafia: normal mafia

new rules:

based on the number of players there will be 3 mafia (1 godfather and 2 normal mafia) 4 mafia (godfather dr lecter and 2 mafia) or 5 mafia (one of each and 2 normal mafia). if the players don't want a reporter there will be 1 godfather 1 dr lecter and 3 normal mafia.

for the townspeople there is one of each role and the rest are normal people.

the moderator will write down the rule names on paper and give them to all the players

nobody will be killed in the first night. the first night only mafias wake up to know who is who. they will know who every mafia's role is.

when everyone wakes up the moderator will choose who is the first to talk. then everyone will talk in order (the moderator will choose clockwise or c clockwise) you can't tell your rule. you can only say that you are from the townspeople. the day will end when a full circle is complete. people can also request a challenge from the person currently talking. if the player accepts then they will talk even if its been there turn before or hasn't been there turn yet after that the player who gave the challenge will talk (or not if they already have or don't want to talk). you can only talk for twice via challenge each round. people also give a thumbs up or down if they agree or disagree with the person talking but this won't effect the voting. the person talking can also say give a thumbs up if you think this or that.

at night first the mafia kills someone then the reporter chooses someone from the townspeople then the detective chooses someone then the doctor then the sheriff then doctor lecter then the mayor. after that if the mayor died nobody will know the roles but at day all dead people will say there last words before knowing who killed them and getting eliminated.

how to vote: the after everyone talked you the moderator will count the votes and the people with the highest votes stand up to defend themselves with one final speech. after the speech there will be a final vote. if its a three way tie then nobody gets voted out but if its a 2 way tie then both of them get voted out. and if its 1 person they get voted out.

Here are some tips on mafia
1.If ur gonna use cards then instead of looking at ur card 1st, you can look at other people expressions bc if they have a smile on their face then they are most likely be mafia, detective or doctor, if they seem normal then they most likely have no role and on the good side.
2.If you happen to be mafia and playing without revealing ur role, say ur the detective and ur parter is good and hope the real detective doesnt come out then suidide at night bc the doc most likely gonna heal u which will be revealed and if u are killed, it makes it more convincing then ur parter will be a 100% good even he/she is bad.
3.If u are detective trust ur gut and point out ur suspicious bc u will get mafias by chance it also works with the doctor.
4.Keep track of voting rounds and the people who died to figure out who is who, like if someone voted for the person claiming to be the detective, he is either mafia or detective.
it benefits the mafia alot bc they just can kill him off so that u can accuse others of being mafia without any suspicions. It also tests the detective bc if the person that voted a claimed detective and still alive then he most likely be lying unless the mafias are clueless.
5.Look at how people act in the game bc the most frustrated people are mostly no role viligers, the most accusing people are either mafias, viligers that are confident or the detective who checked on a mafia,
the people who got everyone attention are good bc a mafia doesn’t wants attention to themselves since they are hiding thier role.
6.Dont forget ur role bc imagine forgetting ur mafia and there are 4 players left with 2 mafias, imgine u didn’t heal or check anyone bc u forget ur doctor or detective😂.
7.Dont forget to say thier role to wake them up instead of thier name if ur the moderator😂.

I played this game alot but i play with 3 more roles. This is how i play it with 12-18 players

evil side
3 mafias
1 bad town person

good side
1 dectective
1 doctor
1 necromancer
2 partners
rest town people

how all roles works
evil roles
mafias-kill one person
-must be same amount as good side
bad town person-win only if the mafias does
good roles
dectective-check one player if he is a mafia or not(checking the bad town people will say he is good)
doctor-heal one person
necromancer-know what side each player voted(only if no roles are revealed after one deaths)
partners-know who each other and thier both good
town people-does nothing at night but vote

You don't need cards and definitely not 12 people. I've played it with 7 and it worked fine.

How to play with few people:(I know because I play with my siblings and cousins)
Firstgly, cut papers and write civilians on them. On two or more, write mafia. Fold the papers and shuffle them, throw them and every player will get one. One person will say. Everyone close ur eyes. So everyone close their eyes, even the person who said it(he/she is also playing) . Then he or she will say with their eyes closed, "mafia open ur eyes" the mafias will identify each other and then the person u said mafia open ur eyes will say mafia close ur eyes. And then they will say everyone open ur eyes. Everyone will start pinpointing and accusing people whom seem sus. And after 2 or 3 mins it will be voting time
And that's all!
