Neon Genesis Evangelion: 'A Cruel Angel's Thesis' cello cover (ft. Sihao He)

This is my cello cover of "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" (残酷な天使のテーゼ), which is the opening theme song of the 1995 anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Originally performed by Yoko Takahashi, I had the amazing Sihao He play the main melody of the song. This opening is one of the most famous anime openings of all time, and it has even achieved meme status. In my arrangement, I went with a total of 10 cellos to capture the full harmonies of the chorus in the original, and also added some cello percussion to help drive the beat. In the middle, I wrote a short original "guitar" solo which uses a bit of extended technique for vibrato where I pull the string with my left hand and go wild.

A bit about Sihao: He is the Grand Prize winner of the prestigious 3rd Gaspar Cassado International Cello Competition in Japan and won 3rd prize of the 2019 ARD International Competition in Munich, Germany. Furthermore, Sihao is also a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and has numerous upcoming performances. He is currently pursuing a D.M.A. at Northwestern University.
