Data cleansing is crucial in the analytics and data science fields. In fact, there's a joke about this:

"Data Scientists spend 80% of their time cleaning data, and 20% complaining about it!"

Tableau, Machine Learning, Visualization, Prediction, etc. is really the fun part of the job. However, in order to do these things well, you need good quality data to use and in the real world, that's very rare to come by. In almost all cases, there are cleaning steps you need to do and that could include:

1. Filling nulls and gaps
2. Restructuring fields
3. Consolidating multiple sheets or various data sources
4. Correcting/rebuilding formulas
5. ..........and much more!!!!

In this case study, I'll show you some really basic techniques in how to clean merged data in Excel. There are other options/techniques in cleaning this so ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

Jellyman you have taught me much thank you. I look forward to your content every week. I feel I must share a quicker way to De-merge and fill gaps.
Step 1. Highlight area of the table that has the merged cells. Click 'Merge & Center' to De-merge the cells.
Step 2. Click 'Find & Select' on the home ribbon (keeping the cells highlighted). Then 'Go To Special'. Select 'Blanks'. 'OK'
Step 3. Type '= (then up arrow)' then (Ctrl + Enter) This will fill the blanks with the cell above.
Step 4. Copy and Paste Values for the same cells as step 1 to remove the formula.
This changed my life when I found this technique. Hope it can change all your lives also! Enjoy!! :)

In excel you can press Alt + A + E text to coloumn....try it to convert num into text or text into num..

How do you know if this is the correct method? What if the actual value will be different than what we filled the empty space with then?

Thank you very much for your video, Sir. When there is a large set of data where data cleaning is required, Can we use Tableau prep or power query as Excel might slow down due many number of rows. Please clarify..
