Lana Bachynski is a Lead Animator in R&D at Riot Games. Of course, if we showed you any of that work, we’d have to use the flashy thing on you. Luckily, Lana cut her teeth at Riot on the League of Legends PC team, and she knows a thing or two about animating champs. So sit down and strap up as she shows us how to make Akali go grrr.

The Riot Games Super Art Power Hour is a quarterly, long-form educational segment spotlighting super art and super artists at Riot. For a deeper dive into the game art production pipeline, check out our So You Wanna Make Games?? series.

really glad riot is putting this sort of stuff out. I don't animate but I find it interesting.

I love her laid back attitude towards animation in general. Like she has the technique and the theory down, so now she just focuses on the art itself, if that makes sense

Even if this doesn't get millions of view. This IS inspiring more people to become animators! Keep them coming! I might just get back into it and use me 3D animation degree! And heck... Next thing you know I'm applying to Riot Games!

It's nice to see that animating as a passion and as a job are relatively similar. Seeing Lana have those struggles with keyframing and having to be very intricate with how she does those animations is very relatable. One missing keyframe or an oddly flexed limb and your character will go bending all sorts of ways.

As someone who just graduated with a diploma in 3D animation and VFX, this sort of stuff is _priceless_ for me. Especially considering I want to do a lot of fight choreographies in my own personal pieces to put on YouTube and such.

omg finally someone who doesn't work strictly with stepped and keyposes 😭 I work exactly like this too and I've always been thinking that some day I need to learn the "real" way. I can finally relax and trust in my own workflow. Thank you, such an inspiring video ❤/Game animator and a BIG League nerd

Didn't expect to watch the whole video, watching Lana animate and just talk through her process while giving out really good advice makes me really appreciate the medium more! Thanks Riot for putting this kind of stuff out for everyone!

I see riot documentary I click and watch. The previous arcane documentary was so awesome to learn about how things went and are made

I really needed this right now. I'm in my animation portfolio class, and I fell in love with animation (which surprised me!). I want to eventually end up at Riot, and this is such good reinforcement and motivation. This lady is a fantastic teacher!

Everything that Riot is doing on the back side of everything that we enjoy is top tier. I mean, we already appreciate these while we are playing their games, but everytime I see behind the scenes like this, I appreciate it more. Thank you Riot.

The fact that a company like Riot is offering content like this is amazing, as a 3D animator myself, videos like this really put out a standard and goal that I can work towards. Thank you Riot.

This woman is like the most famous in the industry for me. First I saw her in a podcast about heroes of the storm. Then on riot conference. And now a new video. I love her

Whoa I remember Lana being the president of the animation club at Academy of Art when I was a freshman. She was a leader among students encouraging us to grow our skills. So awesome to see her in this!

52:19 There's actually a button fix for gimbol lock. You don't need to force every frame to move the way you want. In the graph editor window, at the top "Curves" -> "Euler Filter". That button fixes it right up!

Just keep in mind, if you have purposefully large rotations between keys (like a 360% spin) Euler Filter might also remove that. Adding an extra key or two in between should stop it from happening though. Hope that helps!
