Introduction to Taxonomy

The Jaguar, a magnificent and ferocious big cat that originates from the Americas. Its name is derived from the languages of the native peoples of Amazonia and means ‘true beast’. But the Jaguar has another name – Panthera onca. This is its Latin binomial name, but why does it have one? What does it mean? This was a well explained video but I feel that is something I should point out, Jaguar (Panthera onca) have only one living subspecies now as modern mDNA shows, while leopard (Panthera pandus) do have 8 or so recognised subspecies, which you defiantly used here with those illustrations, so I think you guys might have got them a wee bit confused. Still a nice video and Really enjoyed the simple explanation on taxonomy, which confuses a lot of people

Any definition of the taxonomic ranks by themselves independent of other ranks? It seems we are using the examples but not trying to define the ranks by themselves standing alone.
