I personally liked to use it to give a sound a special kind of delay, glitches, and make it sound interesting. For this type of effect I know some free alternatives, I also use a lot ++bubbler (sometimes I use Hysteris if I want the classic statter/glitch effect) for pads and atmosphere in general.
Anyway there are some good free alternatives for Portal that I recommend : ++bubbler, Argotlunar, GranuLab and PolyGas

You can easily use this for stock instruments in your DAW.

I have Portal for quite some time, but often it's mangling the audio signal way too much when playing around with the presets.
Therefore i tend to use Shaperbox 2 much more than Portal.
