Shimano PD-EH500 review

The Shimano PD-EH500 is a combination bike pedal that comes with SPD cleats on one side and flats on the other. It's similar to the Shimano M324 but comes in a slightly different design and colour. In this video, I'll review the pedal and show you what it looks like on the bike.

The SPD side is a standard mountain bike clip, with adjustable tension so that you can control how easy it is to clip in and out of. By default, they come quite tight so you will probably want to reduce some of the tension before using them.

The colour is dark grey. This suits most cranksets better than the metal look of the M324. However, it should be noted it is suitably different from black, so will still look slightly different if you get your eyes up close. And the clip itself is pedal.

The flats side provide a fair amount of grip. Each pedal comes with six screws that you can insert into the pedal to give your shoes something else to grip onto.

I like these pedals. They have replaced the PD-M530 SPD pedals I had on my bike as I found I did want to ride flat when I was just popping down to the bike shop or over to Parkrun. And they still look pretty cool.

Excellent review. I think this may be the only video I've seen where someone actually shows what its like to switch between sides

Shimano PD-EH500 are 386g / pair, which with the grip pins fitted, is quite a lightweight and effective set of pedals for cyclocross and gravel bikes. Most cyclocross and gravel bike pedals are not hybrid, most are heavier with many brands well over 400 g / pair, and are uglier. So the Shimano PD-EH500 is the perfect alternative to fix all those issues.

Great review. Handy for commutes and road/mtb rides. Feels like the release is a bit too loose but then handy for confidence learning to ride clipped in.

Excellent review thank you.

Being a clipped noob and not knowing if i do or don't want clipless then this gives the best of both worlds.

"They have replaced the PD-M530 SPD pedals I had on my bike as I found I did want to ride flat when I was just popping down to the bike shop " This is the exact pedal I currently have and exactly why I'm interested in this pedal.
Thanks for the overview.

I’m coming off some race face Chester flats and got these today. Need flats for commute and excited to try clips for the steep fire roads I have to climb.

This is really helpful. I love my previous Shimano clipless pedals, but I don't live in a very bike safe city and need a platform for my commute.

I prefer to stay unclipped when I ride in town. I have the PD-A530 on one bike but they're not in sale anymore, EH500 seems to be a good alternative for my new bike. Thanks for that useful video.

These are just perfect for me. When I ride long uninterruped trails I clip in but unfortunately when I ride through town or in the wet I prefer not to clip in. For the price I can't complain.

Because the pins aren't bolted through they can drop from the socket, already lost 3 pins after riding < 500 km.

being new to clipless i i bought these pedals for gravelbike, ,i feel safer using flat side in town traffic and then cliping in when on the open road or tracks

Just got these pedals. I love them, but after 5 days and only @ 100 miles of light commuting and road riding, the dark grey coating is coming off. There is no way to contact Shimano on their site, but they need to improve on the coating aspect. Anyone else experience this?

I wonder if this grey is the same one found on the Shimano Tiagra groupset... at least on video it seems to have that dark grey, slightly greenish look. Could you help a fellow Chris out?

I have been using classic spd since many years. I want to change now but undecided between this model and the XT T8000. The latter has a wider platform (which I like), but it seems to make the pedal longer (stick out). Have you ever tried the XT T8000? how does it compare? Thanks

Hi Chris! When you pedal on the flat side does the shoe clip made contact with the surface of the pedal?

These seem to be an evolution of the A530.
