Half of today’s Poland used to be the territory of Germany. This is how the borders changed after the WWII
. When talking about the future of Europe, Churchill used matches to define the future of Poland: he moved the eastern and western borders to the West.
Poland would get parts of Silesia, Pomerania, Western Prussia and more marine access.
Ukraine would get Eastern Galicia, parts of Bukovina, Transcarpathia. Grodno and Brest would go to Belarus.
Lithuania got Vilno and parts of German territories of Eastern Prussia. The Soviets got Koeningsberg, Pillau, and Tilzit
Czechoslovakia was restored in its initial borders, and Germans were to leave Sudetes, and Polish were to abandon Cieszyn.
Romania got Transilvania, but lost Southern Dobruja
. Germany was also divided between East and West. Despite the fact that Stalin proposed to keep it neutral and united.
12 million Germans were deported. Half a million – perished. Germany became divided for forty years.
