Fender Mustang GT200 Amplifier vs Fender Super-Sonic 60 (BLIND TEST)

In this video Brian and I put the brand new Fender Mustang GT200 modelling amplifier agains the Fender Super-Sonic 60 Tube/Valve amplifier. The Mustang and the Super-Sonic are both running a 2x12" speaker setup. Each amplifier is mic'd up with a Rode M3 microphone. We spent almost an hour trying to get the tones spot on but we couldn't 100% nail it most likely due to the custom speakers in the super-sonic cabinet. That said, I think we got pretty close and I wonder how many folks can pick it? I'll post the results at around 2000-3000 views. ‎

What I love reading through the comments is how the sounds have been described in such a varied way. Music and tone are obviously very personal and subjective. Good show to those who put effort and conviction into their answers.

I wish B had a bit more reverb added. cause it was a lot more dry and A was wetter. so, that kinda made a difference in the tone as well. I think for the most part I like A best but on a lot of the most distorted tones, it was REAL close. Which tells me that the new mustang has got a better grip on the higher gain stuff. Sounded great!

Great videos. Thank you so much for the Fender Mustang III presets. Everything you do is awesome and I know how hard it must be to find the time to do these things.

I'm going with A - Super-Sonice 60 and B - Mustang GT200. The B-amp sounded pretty thin with the clean tones, a bit better with some dirt. If A ends up being the Mustang, then I'm really impressed. :)

Please let me know which one you think is which or at least which one you like the sound of more and why. :-) I will post the results in a few days time. Also towards the end of the shootout we cranked the gain on both amps. This is as close as we could get. Brian and I made the amp presets for the V2 amp copy patches. If we could get it closer we could but this was it. We spent over 40 minutes messing with the amplifier to get the sound for this video.

These two amps weren't set up close enough to make this A/B comparison relevant. A stayed clean longer than B and A had reverb. Not a great comparison if the point is to compare how well the Mustang emulates a Super Sonic. When I first got my GT100 there was a fizzy sound attached to all of the drive tones that has started to go way as the speaker has broken in. So I was listening for that fizzy sound. My guess is B is the Mustang.

I think A was the Super Sonic, and B was the Mustang GT200. Thanks for great content week after week, Shane!

I prefer A because its a well rounded sound. I have a feeling that B is the Mustang because I can't really hear a whole lot of tube sag.

I think a dry (effect-less) comparison would be nicer for both clean and drive, and if a reverb needs to be used, maybe an external reverb to keep that variable out of the equation since we're really only looking at how well the Mustang can model the sound of the real thing.

The reverb levels didn't really match over YouTube, and the drive didn't seem close enough through the recording.

Both sounded very different from each other!

Thank you for the comparison Shane, and sorry for picking your video apart.

This just proves what I have said all along. Solid state can sound just as good as valve if it's a quality amplifier. There are shitty tube amps, this not being one of them... but there are shitty tube amps. The reason I've always loved vintage Peavey solid state.

Well A sounds great, and B doesn‘t sound bad, so I guess A is the tube amp. Thanks for the shootout, I actually loved the first tone and would buy that amp

I liked A. It did seem cleaner. I loved the second snip. Oh boy did I just prefer the Mustang. Looking forward to the answer.

I prefer A. Warner and full. B seems thinner. I don't want to guess on which amp is which because the custom speakers in the sonic have me stumped. If I knew what those speakers were I would take a stab at guessing. Overall though. I prefer A.

Don't know which is which, but they sound nothing alike. I guess I like A better just because it tonally suits me better.

I'm gonna say A is the mustang. It sounds much more like an amp and environment rather than B that sounded like a speaker on the proximity of a microphone. I know they were both miced up the same but I suspect the cabinet modelling and more comprehensive eq of the Mustang to give the impression of less forward mids. I could be wrong of course!

going to change my vote... A is the valve amp, B is the new mustang. Rig B has a very "boxy", naisal, squawky tone. Congested like it has a cold. The speakers dont sound like they are "breathing" naturally. Rig A sounds very natural, speakers are broken in properly and creating the full spectrum... bass and treble. Shane, can we do the evaluation again? but next time play both amps through the same cabinet?

I really don't know anything about either amp but I liked the sound from A the best. To me it sounded fuller, richer, warmer.

Everyone has a different ear, but I preferred B, so much so I thought it had to be the Super Sonic. Based on other comments, I'm doubting that assumption. A sounds compressed with not a lot of range. I thought B sounded like a tube amp, and reacted very well to pick action, especially on lead tones. If B is the Mustang, it's settled, I'm buying one!

I'm really disappointed. In the thumbnail for this video, there are clearly explosions behind both amplifiers.

As I was listening I was reading thru the comments and all I can say is WOW! Some of you people really crack me up. That said I have a set of Equator 5.2 powered studio speakers hooked to my IMAC and both amps really sounded good to me. Im a Mustang V2 player and I thought the nasally growl of B was very familiar to me so I say B was the Mustang. I liked both so Im okay with it if Im wrong. Great test! BTW, please see if you can do a M3 V2 vs MGT100 test for those of us who might want to upgrade our M3's and M4's. Cheers!
