00:00 BRETT TUTOR: Is your home healthy? Believe it or not, the term "healthy home" has been around since the 1930s, introduced by the American Public Health Association. And ever since then, that term has been refined, to focus in on homes that are dry, clean, safe, contaminant free, pest free, properly ventilated, and thermally controlled.

00:21 TUTOR: Now, a new vision of wellness at home is evolving, to also include more holistic outcomes such as well-being. Today, Americans spend about 70% of their time indoors and often the air quality outside is cleaner than the air that's inside your own home. There's so much that goes into air quality inside of a home, but let's start with VOCs or volatile organic compounds, which is found in paint. And you may not know, but if your home was built as little as five years ago, there's a good chance that it has VOCs. VOCs are carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. So things like paint, flooring, and other building materials will off-gas, sending these chemicals into the air. Most homes built today use paints and materials with little or no VOCs and that's the first step to a healthy home.

01:09 TUTOR: Next, is the HVAC system or [chuckle] that big thing that circulates air through your home. First, filtration has improved significantly, but also homes today are built pretty much airtight. This keeps your energy bills down and moisture, pests, and pollution out. But rather than just cleaning and re-circulating your interior air, systems like this bring fresh outside air in, filter it, and circulate it through your home, providing the best of both worlds, fresh, clean air for you and your family to breathe.

01:40 TUTOR: Now, this is where it gets really cool and really high tech. There are companies introducing building materials like dry wall, flooring, and even paint that actually improve indoor air quality by scrubbing the air. Many capture toxic contaminants in the environment and then break them down. That's so cool!

02:00 TUTOR: A healthy home isn't just about eliminating harsh chemicals from the air. A healthy home also focuses on wellness and how a home makes you feel. A lack of natural light can affect your mood, so an abundance of natural light should be a priority. And many people feel more at peace when they can connect to the outdoors, in great spaces like this outdoor kitchen or big, beautiful backyards. Plus, builders consider the community itself. Are there options to connect with nature? Are there walking trails? Is there a fitness center? Does the community foster a neighborly feel? All of these things contribute to your well-being. All of these things create a healthy home for you and your family.
