Handel: Israel in Egypt, HWV 54

Handel will always be associated with his Messiah. But of course he wrote quite a number of other oratorios as well. “Israel in Egypt” – originally entitled “Exodus” - is one of them. It was written in just one month immediately after “Saul”. With three parts it has an unusual form. This is one of only two oratorios Handel based on texts from the Bible.

The versatile and Chamber Choir of Europe (founded in 1998) has quickly become of the leading chamber choirs. The singers are joined here by a cast of equally young vocal soloists. Together with the Orchester der Deutschen Händel-Solisten – yes, they specialize in Handel – they give a warm-blooded performance.

I sang June 2021 and November 2021 the cantata "The ways of Zion do mourn" which shares the music of all the first part. No surprise that he could compose this work in one month... A beautiful work, indeed.

I'm sure in Handel's time the performers would have made something more of the final few bars, instead of a landing on a final thud, resulting in the audience not knowing if the work is over, or if there's more to be heard.

I cannot quite work out if it's performed on period instruments. If not, it sounds unusually convincing and acceptable. And by the way, who painted that picture?
