DUNE PART TWO 4K UHD Blu-ray Review

preview_player
Показать описание
Review to the 4K UHD Blu-ray release of DUNE PART TWO. Only a 4K disc in this pack but the steelbook version did include the Blu-ray. All the extra features are contained within the 4K disc so there shouldn't ever be a requirement for the Blu-ray assuming you have the requisite 4K disc player.
Sound is Dolby Atmos with an option for 5.1. Image aspect ratio is 2.40:1 throughout and not the 1.90:1 plus about an hour of 1.43:1 as seen in faux IMAX theatres and genuine IMAX theatres where 15/70 blow up prints were screened (only 12 prints worldwide).

It’s incredible how you built that masking John and I bet saved a fortune. I make do with a 16 x 9 and I’m happy with that. The amazing thing is projector users don’t get close to actually what is on these 4k discs in terms of brightness. I still wouldn’t swap movie watching for a tv instead of my projector though. Great video as always John !

I am no lover of the dune franchise. But your videos are top notch. Thank you.

I had the good fortune of catching this wonderful film at the BFI IMAX in early April on holiday in London, and was very impressed. I’m really looking forward to dipping into this 4K release; if it’s anything like the first film, I’m sure it will be a top 10 4K studio release for 2024. Thanks, John, as always for the great content.

Amazing review as always. I pre-ordered mine months ago and still haven't seen it because I was sad it didn't include any IMAX scene, but after watching your review I'm gonna make it one my weekend watches, thank you :))

Watched them back to back John . Agree with you about the continuity it was very well done.Looked and sounded great on my oled and through av system. Just heard about the Imax on Bradford reopening this is good for me can't wait. Thank you John for an excellent appraisal.

Another great review, thank you. I have to agree with that charging £25 for a 4k only release with no blu ray shows a disturbing price creep and lack of value but nonetheless an excellent movie very well reproduced for home entertainment.

Nice. Watched it on my OLED. Amazing. The Atmos mix was sensational also.

Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦!
I bought the 4k bluray and watched it at home. I couldn’t find time to see it at the theatre. Initially I was a little mad that the bluray doesn’t have the IMAX aspect ratios, but man did I disappear into this movie! Thankfully the kids were in bed and we could crank the volume and not have any interruptions. Was thinking about this movie for a couple days after watching it. Which I think is a sign of a great movie.

Hi John, have you seen 4K Lawrence of Arabia? I don't recall you ever mentioning it, or giving it a review? It is absolutely astonishing: a true reference disc, just like watching it in 70mm for the first time! It's worth the high investment. I saw it originally in 70mm at the OLS, then at the Metropole, Victoria, at a 70mm screening at the Dominion and then the 70mm extended revival in the late 80s at the much-missed Odeon, Marble Arch. I think it's the best 4K transfer ever! Sorry to gone about it, but it certainly exceeded my expectations, and I thought the standard Blu-ray couldn't be improved upon! Cheers.

YES!!! I completely agree about the darkness in Dune. I picked up the 3D Blu-Ray initially and I couldn't see anything for much of the film. The sandworm scene was by far the worst though. I tried it on my 3D projector, a 3D TV, even a VR headset but I couldn't find a way to watch it so I could see what was going on. I gave up on that and purchased the 4K disc and although it's better, I still feel as though it's too dark overall. It's a great transfer but I just wish it was brighter by default.

I went to go Dune: Part 2 in the theater about 2 months ago. I originally thought people were over praising it because some were already calling the best film of the century. I think it’s a great film and the best film of this year so far but I think it’s too early to call it the best film of the century. Enjoyed your review of the 4k. Might get it on Blu-ray because I don’t have a 4k blu ray player yet.

Great review John. I live in Belfast but was lucky enough to catch a screening of this in the BFI IMAX during a work trip to London. Probably the most exhilarating cinematic experience of my life. You're lucky you don't have a body of water separating you from such an amazing cinema. Their 25th anniversary line-up looks wonderful too. Very tempting.

Looking forward to your next video.

never saw the original Dune nor have i read the books. bought the Dune 4k on faith and loved it. didn't think twice about Dune 2. would love to see both in IMAX but I don't think that possibility will ever repeat itself. 👍🏼

Thanks John. Glad you appreciate the new 4K release. Long love physical media!

I was fortunate enough to see Dune 2 at BFI IMAX and the Ronson IMAX Theatre (inside the British Science Museum).

Both were awe inspiring experiences. Sublime.
The Science Museum was sharper, richer colours and more modern looking (due to the GT Dual Laser projector and not being scanned back on to film). Unfortunately, the black handrail running along the bottom of the screen was slightly distracting.
The scale of seeing Dune at the BFI IMAX was otherworldly and almost psychedelic.

I love the fact that you tagged your Dune part 1 video on to this one. They make a fun and interesting watch when you put them together. Very much like I imagine, it would be for the films that they cover. I haven't been able to do that with the films yet, as I don't own them yet. I've got my eye on the double pack, though.

Nice one John
I didn't get into the Dune films as yet, will I ever?
But I loved your twiddling around with your screen control and explanation of the difference between format's in that film.
Sometimes the screen image is so dull in some cinemas it spoiles my enjoyment completely.
So I would certainly think of watching Dune at the Waterloo Imax Also wish they would get on with the technology and produce films in full length imax guality and get back to some total 70mm film projection on real 70mm curved screens.
Dreaming for the time being but not lost hope.
