Dr. Mary Barbera discusses some body parts teaching strategies for children with autism. Today’s video is filled with body parts teaching ideas for parents and professionals of children with autism.

You might be wondering why teach body parts if your child or client with autism doesn’t even know how to talk. But teaching body parts to toddlers and young children with autism have numerous benefits. That’s why learning body parts as soon as possible is a great decision. Children can learn to indicate pain, can learn the signs to the bodies, given they are easy, and can talk sooner. Body parts tend to be one syllable in length and are easier to say then other words.

In this video, I cover the importance of teaching body parts in more detail and tips for teaching body parts: 3 simple methods. If you’ve got a Mr. Potato Head, some paper and a pencil or pen, or some creativity to come up with a song, you’re on your way. There are also many body parts songs on the internet for you to use as a resource too.

This video was very helpful for me to teach my Down syndrome child how to say and label bosy parts. i had no idea that the children need to learn them so badly when they are in pain . I really like the rational behind. you are doing an amazing job to creating awareness among people. keep guiding us. Thank you.

Thank you! I have a Mr. Potato Head for my daughter, it’s working, it’s a slow process but it’s coming along. Patience is the key.

Hi Mary Iwben I purchased potato head for my clients ( I’m an Slp) after joining your Cb bundle course, my 6 year old typically dev twins were so excited about it, first I had to let them try playing with it and I put it away for my clients!!

I too was having doubts if to join Ms Barbera course., as I see 30-40 yr old autistic individuals, but pairing, is so effective they sit with me some days even without reinforcement, video modeling all helpful, I’m so glad thanking God I took course so I can help my guys 🥰

Thank you! I'm one of moms who took your course and I did teach my daughter body parts withs Mr. Potatoe Head. In the beginning my daughter did no like him. Do not give up, being very animated and fun with this toy is crucial.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience as a mom who made mistakes, because that makes me feel less alone when you say "I didn't have any clue". I just got some Mr potato head from ebay, I'll start using it with my son and my students as well (that should work great also to teach a second language to preschoolers, to whom I teach)

Thank you so much for your advice, I'm a mom of 3 autistic children. I work every day with my first son how is 5 and half years old non verbal autistic.i started therapies with him since he was 3 years old Ma'am he can match and sort items in different ways in very high level and some other works . It's about one month I work with him to be able to identify objects and body parts... it's very difficult for him , (now he just can identify 7 animals from sounds not with their names) and other like auto from sound, ball, pen, eraser, phone with prompt . He can't even identify his picture or my picture which means he can get one sound . Word is made of more than one sound its impossible to learn for him still now, I'm feeling very bad for him, if u give me some tips for his problem it will be so kind of you. Thank you

I just ordered our Mr. Potato Head. He seems really good at putting the parts in the right places as his match-to-sample skills are great.. I'm working on his tacting skills with body parts.

You mentioned it being more important for the child to be looking at your mouth when saying words. Do you have any recommendations with BTs needing to wear masks with the current situation?

I bought your book recently. My 27 month old son has improved a lot with manding and tacting. Now im.teaching him to identify my body parts and his. He has no problem with body parts, but gets confused with different people's body parts. He doesn't get the concept of whose, It's frustrating.
