Unpack My Gas Kiln With Me

Показать описание
What unpacking the kiln is like.
A quick montage that shows various pots taken out from my latest reduction firing to1290ºC. Once that temperature has been reached and cone ten is nice and flat, I switch the gas off, let the kiln crash cool down to 1100–1000ºC or so, then fully close it up, so that it cools much more slowly for about 36 hours or so.
When the time finally comes to crack the kiln open, I first let the last of the stifling hot air out by opening the spy-holes and sliding open the damper and crack the door open a little. It’s always a pleasure, in colder months at least, standing by the opening and feeling hot air wafting out.
Then, the pots are unpacked, usually from bottom to top, (they’re cooler lower down and get warmer as you go up, to the point where vessels on the top layer would scald your hands).
It’s always an exciting process. There are always a few surprises, some good, usually bad, in this case that was 5 or so crawled dark green pots that quickly met their demise under the fall of a hammer.
Once everything has been removed, I’ll lift out the kiln shelves and clean them, (if they need it, the batt-wash sometimes flakes off), then it’s the pots turn to be cleaned up, their bases sanded smooth and the lids cracked off jars.
