Toby has said a few words about working on the soundtrack

"Trying to replace those songs feels like breaking into somebody's house and pasting your face into their family photo album."

Apparently he wasn't very comfortable doing the new songs since he knew it wasn't going to make the original ost justice

He also made most of battle themes including the pepper steak replacement we hear in the trailer.

For those who didn't know, Toby Fox was inspired by OFF when making Undertale (Papyrus’ design was originally based off Dedan, Sans takes inspiration from Zacharie and the Judge, and Ghost Fight is pretty reminiscent of the original Peper Steak)! pretty cool how things can come full circle sometimes

From the Toby Fox interview on Fangamer regarding this soundtrack:

"I also was assigned... the normal battle theme. I'm gonna be honest, just feels like I got assigned to take a bullet in the back for everybody else. I looked up almost every jazz song from the 1920s, I commissioned Carlos to make an entire fake jazz song for me so I could cut it up into samples, I tried making like 6 entirely different songs, but nothing I could come up with on my own felt quite right.

In the end, I summoned Camellia to help me out by re-remixing my first track into multiple versions, and so ultimately I think it will feel pretty cool as you go through the game. (But, I'll be the first to say that I can't replace your memories...)"

Much as I adore Pepper Steak and am sad the remaster won't have the original OST, this really feels like a "Holy sh*t, two cakes!" situation. We will always have Pepper Steak, and all the original songs, and the original free version of the game, but we now have an ENTIRE, ADDITIONAL, OFF-themed soundtrack (and I'm sure the community will get to work instantly on an "original soundtrack" mod anyway). It's not necessarily a replacement, but an expansion, a companion, an adaptation, a conversation with a classic RPG, and I'm excited to see what awesome new tracks we'll get out of this. I LOVE the groove that this song puts me in.

I have a strong feeling that the traits that people say are "missing" from this track relative to the original Pepper Steak will show their faces in the later versions of the track

Like, Toby clearly knows how to recreate that more off-kilter Industrial sound of the original Pepper Steak because he did it successfully for the trailer music

If there's going to be different versions of this track, then it's probably going to start in a less unsettling place and then descend into something more off, which I've gotta assume will take the form of a more faithful adaptation of the Pepper Steak sound.

It's literally called "White Meat." It's not seasoned yet.

I can tell Toby really *really* tried to capture the spirit of pepper steak here. I think I can even hear a faint allusion to part of the original melody briefly in one section. That plus hearing how long he agonized over it paints a heartening picture of the love being put into this version.

I mean, it's no Pepper Steak, but let's be real, nothing will ever be Pepper Steak again.

While you cannot beat the OG, the fact that each Zone will be getting its own battle theme remix gives room for it possibly evolving as the plot develops.
I can see each iteration becoming more gritty and sinister as the consequences of The Batter’s mission begins to reveal themselves.

This is what Toby said about making the new OST on his interview from the OFF website:
"Well, it's a complicated feeling.

Let me clarify.

Obviously, Fangamer and Mortis wanted to use the original soundtrack. They tried to reach out to the composer, ACC, to get the rights to use it... but ultimately, he felt nervous about signing anything and disappeared. However, he has stated that he doesn't mind that his music isn't being used, and he has no problem with the new soundtrack. So, it's a bit weird, but everything is chill.

That being said, OFF is a very atmospheric and memorable game, and the soundtrack contributed a lot to that. It's an integral part of the memories that people have built of this game. Trying to replace those songs feels like breaking into somebody's house and pasting your face into their family photo album.

But, Mortis asked me if I was interested, and, given that his game really inspired me, and he's a super nice guy... I decided I would try my best to help. To ensure that new players, even if they didn't get the exact same experience, would get a pretty cool one.

I ended up handling a lot of boss tracks. I attempted to match the game's "style" by aiming for idiosyncrasy and atmosphere over everything else. I think the results are pretty cool.

I also was assigned... the normal battle theme.

(But, I'll be the first to say that I can't replace your memories...)

By the way, I did the music for free, and I'll upload my tracks for free after the game comes out. Personally, I don't think the original music is replaceable, so I want to treat what I made like "fanmusic", made just out of love and respect for the original. Alright, see ya."

So ever since UNDERTALE Toby has:
Composed for Pokémon

Collaborated with Mother's creator

Made an arrangement for Smash Bros

Collaborated with ZUN for two tracks

And now OFF?

Funny how a single indie game got him to work with some of his inspirations

keep in mind that this is not at all meant to be pepper steak. this is zone 1's battle theme! personally very excited to see zone 3's theme. that'll probably be a lot closer to the industrial feel of the original

Kind of disappointed that Alias Conrad Coldwood’s iconic and beautiful + atmospheric soundtrack won’t be used in the Steam release, but I adore Toby Fox’s music and I trust him to be able to recreate the same vibes that the original OST created.

Are you telling me an annoying dog peppered my steak?

genuinely love this interpretation. people say “it’s no peper steak, ” which, to be fair, it isn’t, but the little connections really show how much Toby cares about this project. For example, the splitting sample beat drops, the repeating samples, the heavy drums (although not as noticeable, ) ect.

Y'know, I kinda really fw this. I imagine that this is gonna be a situation like The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, where people are gonna be conflicted on the new music at first, but it'll grow on them over time

Toby working on the soundtrack of off is so incredibly fitting

Edit: as usual toby is super humble and proceeds to kick ass. This captures the off vibe so perfectly.

TOBY FOX is working on the soundtrack?
Okay i was worried, but nah we're in good hands.
Just hope he and Camellia make sure to keep the vibe of the original OST intact.

i hope they release the "entire fake jazz song" they made to mix into this one because barely being able to hear the lyrics but understanding some that sound absolutely ripe with symbolism makes me feel like i'm missing out on something

seriously appreciate toby's respect for the original soundtrack in his interview, and he's right that nothing could ever truly replace it, but god this is so good
