Did you use the right cleats? Shimano have fast release cleats for beginners, maybe you had them.

Thanks for the review! I’m glad the HTs worked out. I had the opposite experience. I ran basic Shimano spd’s for years and never had a problem getting in or out. It was basically a non-issue. I bought a new bike, so I threw on the HT T1’s. They come with two different sets of cleats. The 8° cleat’s lateral movement was terrible for me and offered way too much lateral play, so I switched to the 4° which was much better. However, it was sometimes difficult to tell if I had clipped back in and I fell a few times because it takes a more specific motion to unclip. The Shimano’s give you solid feedback when you clip in or out and they do offer an easier cleat to work with. These cleats release from the pedal by rotating your heel in or out. For newbies or those who'd like an easier release, Shimano makes the SH-56 cleats that also allow release in several upward angles as well. That’s what I’m using now. I wanted the HTs to work out because they have such good reviews and look dope. Switched to the Shimano XT. Great review info here on both pedals. The HTs come out on top here, but I disagree. Also, a lot of the connection depends on the shoe. I’m wearing an older version of the specialized 2FO Cliplite.

I really like them because the tread is fairly smooth and doesn’t interfere with clipping in like my specialized recon with a heavier lugged sole does. The newer version of this shoe is getting thrashed on the Specialized site.

Pedal review:

Sharing to minimize the injuries out there. Shred!

Hey mate, will be interested to hear how they’re going after a few months. Mine only lasted a couple of months before the spindle nut came loose on one and chewed out part of the body. Also I find the pins useless as they are directly under the cleat “pocket” of my five ten shoes as I have the cleat to the very back. The 2nd pedal has now bound up, probably from the internal nylock nut tightening up. You’re right they are firm when clipped in but my 3 year old Xt’s are bomb proof and I’m going back to them. Hope you have better luck with yours.

Did you add a shim to get the clue beyond the tread?

What’s up guys?! Sorry for the crappy audio in the beginning it was the best I could get it without a bunch of road noise in the background! 😬

What shoes did you have with the XT's?

I have only ran Shimano and pedals. In the event of a crash I have always come out easily without injury or even realized I clipped out. If you have crashed do the HTs realease easily?

Are you still using the ht’s? I’m having the same problem with spd. Was thinking about ht or time.

You said the Mallets were really hard to get in and out of, but everything i read says that they are the easiest pedal to get in and out of. Could you please elaborate a bit on what your experience was with the Mallet?

Do you think ht will be fine for someone new to clipless?

Will any clipless shoes work with the ht t1?

Best clipless MTB pedals? The ones you DON'T use.
