The electronics in fact all went black. A breaker had tripped. The boat owner said "oh f***" I said "It's ok, I'm navigating with paper and pencil as well as electronics". The breaker reset, the electronics came back on, but what if they hadn't when you are 50 miles up the central California coast and there's not much around?

Lesson: When you are offshore/coastal, always use paper charts and record your position every 12-30 minutes in case the electronics go out.
